A California brewery company which makes the India Pale Ale, has or did come out with a Ganesh beer, where as you can see he's holding beers in his hands and on his trunk. The beer has now been recalled and an apology issued, this came after protests and a lawsuit. The owner reportedly also added that her Hindu 'friends' did not find it objectionable. The man who filed the suit is still going ahead asking for $1 Billion in compensation for Hindus worldwide. (Read Full Article)
Ganesh is the coolest Hindu God, not just the way he looks but read the stories about him you'll understand. He's one of the most beloved and love-able God among our 100 or so (maybe more) different Gods. But, putting him on a bottle of alcohol is going to far. I have seen clothes, sandals and even underwear with Hindu Gods on them but Gods and alcohol don't mix.
Like all beer drinkers i care more about the taste than the name or the label but this isn't correct. Its the whole idea of using such images because they are 'cool looking' and 'exotic' which is disrespectful. After all its not like all these people are devotees, if they were to come out with a Jesus Beer, there will be a lot of people offended. My beef (no pun intended) with such images being used on clothes or any other stuff is that they are used because they look 'cool' and not really respected for what they mean to the 800 million or s0 people worshiping them everyday. Its all about respect.

My personal opinion, you can't be spiritual and a beer drinker. Either you don't care about the picture on your drink, or you don't care to drink. You don't get to do both. Ganesh will always be Ganesh to me, despite what ill-informed people do with his image. Same goes with the swastika.
